Case Study: Instant Increase In Employee Productivity

Problem: A large steel manufacturing company requested a “Free Sounding Board Meeting” with Lester. Again this meeting took place at the company factory so I could observe the business operations. Initially the business owner was more interested in developing systems and also improving marketing to grow his business. Though when I arrived I noticed other issues that were dramatically decreasing worker productivity. I could see that all of the steel workers were walking back and forth to the end of the factory to use a single large drill press that they was needed regularly to compete their work. I also noticed that there was generally a line of 2 or 3 workers waiting to use the drill. The workers would stop and chat, standing idle whilst waiting to use the machine. Often just to drill a small, simple hole.

Solution: I instantly suggested setting up smaller individual drill presses at each workstation. I also developed a new system for how raw materials were delivered and stored so that each worker had all the raw materials they needed for the day, close at hand. This started a chain reaction of small but very important improvements in the manufacturing process.

Result: Production times decreased and worker productivity increased massively. There was less chaos in the factory as everyone had what they needed to complete their work close at hand. The time saved and increased productivity was similar to if they had hired an additional employee. So now they were able to focus their attention on other areas of the business knowing that production was running at maximum efficiency.
